Help! My Windscreen has a Crack!

HELP! MY WINDSCREEN HAS A CRACK!

The number 1 rule when it comes to cracking your windscreen is to stay calm. In many cases, there are a number of simple solutions to this problem, so try not to stress too much if this happens to you. Now depending on the size and location of this crack, you may need a full windscreen replacement. But in some situations, you may be able to wiggle off the hook and instead get the crack repaired. Always call the windscreen experts at Champion Autoglass as soon as you realise your windscreen has a crack.

Firstly, let’s look at what type of crack your windscreen might have.

TYPES OF WINDSCREEN CRACKS

You may have had a rock kick up from the road and hit your windscreen, or been in a little accident down at the local shopping centre. No matter how the crack was created, it’s helpful to know what type of crack it is so you can jump on the phone and give us the full rundown on what you think the issue is. Don’t stress if you don’t know exactly what crack you have, as that’s what we’re here for!

  • Chip
  • We see chips in windscreens all the time in Perth, as these are the most common type of crack that your windscreen is likely to receive. This can be created by a little bit of debris or stone out on the roads which flung up and pinged your windscreen.

  • Bull’s Eye
  • This is another type of chip that’s usually caused by a small impact of a rock or other small object that creates a circular shaped chip with a surrounding cone-like outer circle.

  • Half Moon
  • This one is almost like the bull’s eye crack, but the half-moon isn’t typically a crack that has a fully circular shape to it.

  • Stress crack
  • These types of cracks are usually caused by a large fluctuation in temperature, like when we get those scorching hot days in January.

  • Edge Crack

As the name suggests, an edge crack usually begins within two or so inches of the edge of the windscreen, extending out to the side of the glass.

Depending on the size and location of the crack, it might be safe enough for you to drive to get it repaired. We hear the question of “is it legal to drive with a cracked windscreen” all the time, so feel free to give us a call if you’re a bit unsure about your situation.

HOW TO REPAIR A CRACKED WINDSCREEN WITHOUT REPLACING IT

If you’ve got a relatively small crack in the windscreen, we can save you some time and money by repairing it instead of a full replacement.
